About Us

Aquaholics is owned and run by Greg and Gwen Pugh. Greg has been diving since 2002 and is an Instructor with multiple training agencies. Gwen has been diving since 2005 and is a Dive Master as well as an Aqua Aerobics Instructor. We believe in giving our clients a never to be forgotten experience, through personal attention and therefore focus on smaller groups.

The reefs that surround the Barra Peninsula are exceptional and provide some of the best diving Mozambique has to offer. Giant Manta Rays, the gentle giants of the ocean, frequent our reefs whilst we also have some of the most amazing macro life for the keen photographer. In the summer season, whale sharks can be spotted during the boat ride to the dive site, whilst the winter season brings the hump back whales close to our shores.

Courses, from Open Water all the way to Dive Master, are on offer along with a large variety of specialities. We pride ourselves in quality training and safety.

Whilst we are primarily a DiveRAID Centre, a PADI Instructor is on site and we are able to accommodate those wanting to complete a PADI Course.
For those non-diving visitors, Ocean Safaris, Pansy Island and Sea Horse trips are available. Barra also has a range of different activities available, all of which we are able to arrange.

Palm View Lodge, our sister company consists of 2 fully furnished self-catering units allowing us to offer affordable stay and dive packages.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Other Activities

The Barra area is a popular area known for Marine Megafauna and here we find Whale Sharks, the largest fish in the ocean, during the months of November through to March. One may have the opportunity of snorkelling with these giants should they be spotted. We do insist on safe interaction with Marine life and will teach you the proper technique.

Other marine life that could be seen during any Ocean Safari includes dolphins and the Giant Manta Rays. If spotted and the animals are keen to hang around for a while, it is possible to enter the water and view their actions whilst snorkelling at the surface.

During the months of June through to October, the Humpback Whales are in the area. These majestic creatures can be seen from the deck of one of the many restaurants along the shoreline or closer up from one of our boats during an Ocean Safari. Safe practices, for both the animals and our clients, are carried out during any engagement with Marine life.

Between the mainland and the Barra Peninsula lies an estuary that has plenty to offer. From trips to Pansy Island, where you can collect Pansy Shells, to some of the most fantastic muck diving any area can offer, we have it all. The estuary is home to the sea horse. Those that have an eye for the finer detail will be lucky enough to spot these tiny creatures during any activity designed for this purpose.

For groups, we travel across the estuary to the well-known area of Linga Linga for lunch and a few drinks. Boat rides on rubber ducks for a quicker transfer, or on one of the larger barges with music and large cooler boxes are all on offer.

Whilst we do not directly offer Deep Sea Fishing, this is a popular activity within the area. Should you be interested in a deep-sea fishing trip, just let us know and we will make all the arrangements.

Take a trip on one of the local traditional sailing vessels and interact with the local population. There is so much to be learnt on one of these trips and plenty of fun to be had. We will put you in touch with a safe local operator for an experience not to be missed.

The Legend of the Pansy Shell

There’s a pretty little legend
That I would like to tell
Of the birth and death of Jesus
Found in this lovely shell

If you examine closely
you’ll see that you find here
Four nail holes and a fifth one
Made by the Roman spear

One on each side is the Easter lily
its centre is the star
That appeared unto the shepherds
and led them from afar

The Christmas poinsettia
Etched on the other side
Reminds us of His birthday
our happy Christmastide

Now break the centre open
and here you will release
The five white doves awaiting
To spread goodwill and peace

This simple little symbol
Christ has left for you and me
To help us spread His gospel
Through all eternity.
